At Hume Valley School we understand that students bring with them their own interests and abilities, as well as diverse personal and cultural experiences, all of which has an impact on their learning. We believe that “The Arts “is essential to the students’ intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth and well-being.
One of the primary goals at Hume Valley School is to encourage all students to achieve their full potential as learners and to participate in their community and in society as a whole. Experiences in “The Arts” – Visual Arts – play a valuable role in achieving these goals and provides a natural vehicle through which the students can make their own discoveries and express themselves in a creative and dynamic way.
Visual Arts Overview
The Visual Arts Program at Hume Valley School is designed to provide a range of essential skills that can be used both inside and outside of the classroom. These skills include planning, collecting and organising information, communicating ideas and information, using a wide range of materials and techniques, problem solving and integrating technology. Students are given opportunities to work both independently and collaboratively.
Visual Arts Curriculum
The Visual Arts Curriculum aims to provide structures through which the students are encouraged to learn about themselves and the world around them. It is organised into seven main strands. These include:

In addition, the curriculum allows opportunities for exploration of the various elements and encourages students to experiment and manipulate a variety of materials, tools and equipment for developing skills and concepts in “The Arts”. These elements include:
Visual Arts Focus
Over the course of the year, the students at Hume Valley will refer to people, places, spaces, objects and the environment as well as events and experiences that are of interest to them, as stimulus for art making. Through their art-making, students will explore colour, shape, line, tone and pattern when representing different subject matters, use personal objects and collections as tools for generating ideas and experiment with a range of materials, tools and techniques for communicating ideas. Students will also apply critical thinking skills by responding to design challenges, and investigate construction techniques and arrangements for creating models.
