It is with great pleasure that we introduce Hume Valley to you.
We hope that you find our website interesting and informative.
Hume Valley School is a government school that provides high quality education for students with mild intellectual disabilities who are aged between 5 and 18 years. The school is located on two campuses, both approximately 20 kilometres north-west of the Melbourne CBD. The main campus caters for the educational needs of Primary and early Secondary School age students. Students aged 16 – 18 years undertake the Victoria Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) at our nearby Tanderrum Way campus.
Students come to the school from a wide geographical area using government provided school buses, as independent travellers on public transport or travel with their parents/carers.
Over a period of more than forty years, Hume Valley School has developed an excellent reputation for providing students with the opportunity and encouragement to achieve their potential – academically, physically, socially and vocationally. We endeavour to make sure that our students have modern facilities and enthusiastic teachers and education support staff to enable them to thrive, learn and develop as responsible individuals.
Class sizes are small and our dedicated and highly trained Special Education teachers implement and monitor, with parents, each student’s individual learning plan.
Our strong emphasis on Numeracy and Literacy, particularly in the primary and early secondary years, underpins a well-balanced curriculum throughout the school. As the students approach their post school years, career education and job-related experiences gain curriculum importance. A rich diversity of specialist program and activities support the core curriculum. These include Physical Education, Performing Arts, Traffic Safety Education, Swimming, Food Technology, Visual Arts, Outdoor Education and Camps. A number of the curriculum programs and activities are conducted in the community.
Our award winning computer technology program extends throughout the school giving all students opportunities to increase their ability to communicate with others as well as the chance to enjoy greater independence in their learning.
To best meet the development stages of the students, the school is arranged into seven, age appropriate areas of learning.
Juniors 5 – 8 years Primary/Middles 8 – 11 years
Secondary 12 – 13 years Seniors 14 – 15 years
PreCAL- 16 years VCAL 17 – 18 years
Student well- being is a school priority. A comprehensive program of support and guidance is provided to students, teachers and parents to address areas of student welfare.
